How Much Insulation Do I Need?

What’s Happening

The right amount of insulation depends on your attic’s current depth, the type of insulation already there, and the climate zone your home sits in. Most homes that feel drafty in winter or stuffy in summer are under-insulated by a significant margin, and a quick attic check will usually confirm it.

Here’s the plain version: insulation is measured in R-value, which is a rating of how well it resists heat moving through it. Every climate zone has a recommended minimum R-value for attics, set by the U.S. Department of Energy. If your existing insulation falls short of that target, your heating and cooling system is working harder than it needs to, and you’re losing conditioned air through the ceiling every hour of the day. The fix isn’t complicated, but you need to know what’s up there before you can make a good decision. That starts with measuring what you have.

Why It Happens

The Insulation Was Never Enough to Begin With

A lot of homes, especially those built before the 1990s, were insulated to whatever the local code required at the time. Those older standards were low. If you pull down the attic hatch and see insulation that sits well below the top of the floor joists, or if you can see the joists at all without bending down, the original install was probably undersized from day one. This isn’t a failure, it’s just age meeting a higher standard.

The Insulation Has Settled or Been Disturbed

Blown-in insulation, whether fiberglass or cellulose, compresses over time. What measured six inches when installed might be closer to four now, which is a meaningful drop in R-value. Insulation can also get pushed aside during HVAC work, pest control visits, or amateur attic storage projects. If you see uneven coverage or bare spots near the attic hatch, settling or disturbance is likely the cause.

Moisture Has Compromised the Material

Wet insulation does almost nothing. A slow roof leak, condensation from a poorly sealed duct, or a bathroom exhaust fan venting into the attic instead of outside can saturate fiberglass batts or clump cellulose into a dense, ineffective mat. If the insulation looks dark, compressed, or smells musty, moisture has gotten into it. Damaged material needs to come out before new insulation goes in, or you’re trapping the problem underneath fresh coverage.

Air Leaks Are Undermining the Insulation’s Effectiveness

Insulation slows heat transfer, but it doesn’t stop air movement. If your attic has open gaps around recessed lights, plumbing penetrations, or the top plates of interior walls, conditioned air is bypassing the insulation entirely. You can sometimes feel this on a cold day by holding your hand near the attic hatch or around ceiling light fixtures. Air sealing those gaps before adding insulation is the right order of operations, and it’s something your local Alden Attic Insulation team handles as part of the job assessment.

What to Do Right Now

  • Measure what’s there. If you can safely access the attic hatch from a step stool, take a ruler or tape measure and press it straight down into the insulation near the center of the attic floor. Write down that number. That’s your starting point.
  • Note the type of insulation. Fiberglass batts look like pink or yellow blanket rolls. Blown-in fiberglass looks fluffy and light-colored. Cellulose looks gray and denser, almost like shredded newspaper. Knowing the type helps your technician calculate the current R-value accurately.
  • Check for visible damage. Look for dark staining, clumping, or bare spots. If you see any of those, don’t add insulation on top – photograph what you see and let the team assess it first.
  • Don’t move or redistribute existing insulation yourself. It seems harmless, but loose-fill insulation disturbed by hand creates uneven depths and air pockets. Leave it where it is.
  • Stay out of the attic if you’re not sure it’s safe. Attics with questionable structural decking, poor lighting, or visible pest activity are not the right place for a solo inspection. If anything looks off, stop at the hatch and let a professional take it from there.

How We Fix It

When your local Alden Attic Insulation team arrives, the first thing the technician does is a full attic assessment: measuring existing depth at multiple points, identifying the insulation type, checking for moisture damage, and noting any air gaps that should be sealed before new material goes in.

From there, you get a written price before any work starts. That’s not a policy we bend – it’s part of The Garrison Standard, and it applies to every job. The number on that paper is the number on your invoice.

Most jobs involve blown-in insulation to bring the attic up to the correct R-value for your climate zone. We install products from Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, CertainTeed, and GreenFiber, so you can look up exactly what’s going into your attic before you say yes. If the existing insulation is damaged or contaminated, insulation removal comes first. That work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right within a full year of the job, we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing.
