GreenFiber Attic Insulation Nationwide

GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We install and service GreenFiber blown-in attic insulation across Los Angeles, with most full attic jobs running $1,800 to $4,200 depending on square footage and current R-value. If your GreenFiber insulation has settled, gotten wet, or been disturbed by rodents or contractors, we can assess it same-week and usually complete the fix in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: an upstairs room that won’t hold temperature, a spike in the summer electric bill, or visible settling after a roof repair. GreenFiber’s cellulose product does a real job in L.A. attics, but when it fails, it fails quietly, and you feel it before you see it.

Good insulation doesn’t announce itself – you just stop noticing the heat. When you start noticing it again, that’s the insulation telling you something changed.

Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To

GreenFiber makes one primary blown-in cellulose product line for attics: their InsulMax and Cellulose Blown-In Insulation (often labeled SANCTUARY for the treated version), which we install and service across Los Angeles. The product is consistent across retailers, but the application matters: it’s blown to a target depth, not a fixed bag count. That’s where most compatibility issues come from. If a previous contractor blew to 10 inches when your area needs 14 for R-38, the product isn’t defective – the install was short. We check depth, not just presence.

OEM GreenFiber bags carry a label with the coverage chart printed on the side. If you still have an empty bag in the garage, check the square-footage table on it. That tells you what R-value you should have gotten for your attic’s footprint. For replacement or top-up work, we use GreenFiber product matched to your existing material. We also stock Reflectix radiant barrier for Los Angeles attics where heat gain through the roof deck is the bigger problem, which is common in older Valley homes with minimal ventilation.

One thing to know: GreenFiber’s treated cellulose (borate-based fire and pest resistance) shouldn’t be mixed with untreated cellulose from a different brand. They settle differently, and mixing them doesn’t void a warranty but it does make future depth checks unreliable. We match what’s already up there.

Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing

  • Hot upstairs rooms in summer. Los Angeles attics routinely hit 140°F in August. If your ceiling feels warm to the touch at 3 p.m., your insulation has settled below the depth it was originally blown to. Cellulose settles about 5-10% over its life, but poor install or moisture can double that.
  • Higher electric bills you can’t explain. When R-38 becomes R-20 because of settling, your AC runs longer to hold the same temperature. If your July bill jumped and nothing else changed, the attic is usually the culprit.
  • Cold spots or drafts near ceiling lights and attic hatches. These penetrations get insulated last, and often wrong. If you feel air movement around a can light or the pull-down ladder, the insulation around it has either compacted or was never properly blown into those edges.
  • Visible settling when you look in the attic. Blown cellulose should look like fresh snow drifts – even, fluffy, full-depth. If you see low spots, gaps, or areas where you can see the drywall below, the material has compressed or shifted.
  • Signs of moisture or pests. GreenFiber is borate-treated against pests, but if a roof leak soaked it or rodents tunneled through it, the damaged sections need removal and replacement. Wet cellulose loses R-value fast and holds moisture against your framing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles attics, a full GreenFiber blown-in install or removal-and-replacement typically runs $1,800 to $4,200. Top-up jobs over existing healthy insulation run $800 to $1,600, which covers the additional bags and labor to restore the target depth. What drives the price:

  • Square footage and target R-value. A 1,200 sq ft attic in a 1950s Valley home needs more material than a 900 sq ft attic in a newer build. Most Los Angeles homes benefit from R-38 in the attic, which is about 12-14 inches of blown cellulose.
  • Access and obstruction. Tight attics, low slopes, or ductwork running through the space make the job slower. We price that honestly up front, not as a surprise at the end.
  • Removal. If the existing insulation is wet, pest-damaged, or contaminated, removal costs $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot before we blow the new material.

Every job we do in Los Angeles includes a written price before work starts – the number you approve is the number on the invoice. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back at no charge. That’s in writing, every time.

DIY or Call Us?

Blown-in insulation is not a dangerous DIY like working on torsion springs or wiring, but it’s also not a job most homeowners should attempt with rented equipment from a big-box store. The machines rental yards hand out are inconsistent, which leads to uneven density and poor coverage. We regularly see attics where a homeowner blew 20 bags and got R-19 coverage because the machine wasn’t feeding right. There’s no way to know that without a depth gauge, and by then you’ve spent a full weekend in a 130-degree attic.

What you can safely do yourself: check your current depth with a tape measure, look for visible settling, and note any wet spots or pest activity. Those observations help us give you an accurate picture over the phone. Then call us at (254) 272-5876 for a free estimate. We’ll do the rest.
