How Much Does Blown-In Insulation Cost in Los Angeles?

Blown In Insulation services in Los Angeles typically cost $1,200 to $4,800 for a whole-house attic, which works out to roughly $1.75 to $3.50 per square foot installed. A single small garage attic or a partial top-off can land closer to $700, while a full 2,000-square-foot home with old material that needs removal first often runs $5,000 or more. Most Los Angeles homeowners we work with land somewhere around $2,600, and that figure includes air sealing, baffles over the eaves, and a written price before anyone touches the attic.

Those numbers hold whether you’re in a 1920s Craftsman in Highland Park that’s never been touched or a 2004 tract home in Porter Ranch where the original builder-grade insulation has settled two inches below where it started. What moves the price is almost always the condition of what’s already up there, the square footage, and how much of Los Angeles’s famous heat you’re trying to hold out.

Alden Attic Insulation is the insulation specialist of the Garrison Partners family, independently owned and operated, and held to The Garrison Standard: written prices, written guarantees, and a background-checked crew that shows up inside the window it promised. You can see how that plays out on our home page, or dig into the service itself on our Blown-In Insulation in Los Angeles page.

Blown-In Insulation Cost Breakdown (2026)

Here’s how a Los Angeles job breaks down by line item. These ranges reflect real 2026 pricing for materials and labor in the LA market, including the eight brands we install: Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber.

Work Item Typical LA Range Notes
Blown-in fiberglass (GreenFiber, Owens Corning, Knauf) $1.75 – $2.60 / sq ft Best value for standard open attics; R-38 to R-49 on top of existing
Blown-in mineral wool (Rockwool) $2.60 – $3.40 / sq ft Denser, better fire resistance, holds R-value longer in extreme heat
Blown-in cellulose (GreenFiber) $2.00 – $2.90 / sq ft Good for older homes with odd framing; treated for pests
Air sealing (foam + caulk at top plates, penetrations) $400 – $950 Skipping this undercuts the insulation by 20% or more
Old insulation removal & disposal $1.00 – $2.25 / sq ft Required if existing material is wet, compacted, or contaminated
Attic baffles / rafter vents over eaves $150 – $400 Keeps soffit vents clear so insulation doesn’t block airflow
Radiant barrier (optional, popular in LA) $1.20 – $2.00 / sq ft Reflects heat load from the roof deck in valley and inland areas
Attic hatch / knee-wall access insulation $120 – $300 One of the biggest leak points in any Los Angeles attic

Add those up for a 1,600-square-foot one-story home in Van Nuys with clean, dry existing insulation and no removal needed: you’re looking at about $2,400 to $3,100 installed. Same house in a 2023 build in Playa Vista where the attic is already clean and the R-value just needs a top-off, and the number drops to $1,100 or so. Add full removal of 40-year-old batt insulation that got wet during a plumbing leak, and you’re pulling closer to $4,200.

The single biggest swing factor is whether old insulation comes out. Removal roughly doubles the labor on a job, and in Los Angeles the reason it’s needed is usually either rodent contamination in older hillside homes or water intrusion from a roof issue in the canyons.

What Affects Blown-In Insulation Pricing in Los Angeles

Pricing here isn’t arbitrary. Six things move the number, and in this city, three of them are Los Angeles-specific.

  • Square footage and current R-value. The R-value is how insulation is measured for resistance to heat flow. LA attics generally target R-38 to R-49 under California’s Title 24 energy code, and the gap between what’s there and what the code wants directly determines how much material gets blown in. A home already at R-30 needs a partial top-off; a 1950s ranch with three inches of compressed rock wool needs a full install.
  • Age and type of existing insulation. Older Los Angeles homes often have batt insulation that has settled, been displaced by roofers walking on it, or absorbed moisture. If it’s compacted or contaminated, it has to come out before new material goes down. In our experience, a surprisingly high share of Highland Park and Echo Park attics still have original material from the 1940s and 50s.
  • Attic accessibility and pitch. A low-slope attic with a shallow crawl-through entry in an Alhambra bungalow takes longer than a full stand-up attic in a Porter Ranch two-story. Hard-to-reach sections near HVAC equipment or duct runs add labor time, and labor is roughly 40% to 50% of the invoice.
  • Local climate load (LA’s two zones). Los Angeles isn’t one climate. Coastal neighborhoods like Santa Monica and Redondo Beach have mild temperatures but heavy overnight marine layer, so air sealing matters more than raw R-value. Inland valleys like Woodland Hills, Northridge, and Pasadena swing from 105°F summers to overnight winter dips, which is where higher R-value and radiant barriers actually pay back.
  • Air sealing scope. Roof penetrations, top plates, recessed can lights, and HVAC ducts are the standard leak points. Every hole sealed is material you don’t have to over-blow to compensate. Skipping air sealing and just adding insulation is the most common corner-cut we get called in to fix.
  • Permits and any Title 24 documentation. Most insulation-only attic projects in Los Angeles don’t require a separate building permit, but if the project is part of a larger remodel or an HVAC replacement under a Title 24 permit, the insulation spec has to match what’s on the permit documents. That can add administrative time and a documented R-value confirmation from the installer, which Alden provides in writing as part of the job file.

We’ve seen the same 1,200-square-foot number come in at $1,400 in one LA neighborhood and $3,800 three miles away, and it’s almost never because one contractor is “cheaper.” It’s because one attic was clean and accessible and the other wasn’t.

How Much Should You Actually Budget?

If you’re trying to plan for this, here’s a realistic budget guide for the Los Angeles market in 2026, based on square footage of attic area rather than living space (they’re usually close, but a two-story with a single attic is smaller than you’d guess):

  • Under 1,000 sq ft attic (condo, small bungalow): $1,100 – $2,200
  • 1,000 – 1,500 sq ft attic (typical LA one-story): $1,700 – $3,400
  • 1,500 – 2,200 sq ft attic (larger one-story or story-and-a-half): $2,500 – $4,800
  • Over 2,200 sq ft attic (large two-story or hillside home): $4,200 – $7,500
  • Removal of old material, add-on: $1.00 – $2.25 per sq ft

None of these numbers include any ductwork repair or HVAC replacement, which is a different trade and a different budget. If your technician finds crushed or disconnected flex duct in the attic, we photograph it, document it, and hand you the photos so you can decide how you want to handle it separately. We don’t sub it out and we don’t pad the invoice to cover it.

How Long Does the Job Take?

Most single-family blown-in insulation jobs in Los Angeles are a single-day project. A typical 1,500-square-foot attic runs 4 to 7 hours from arrival to cleanup, and that includes masking off the living space, laying drop cloths, blowing material, and hauling out any debris. Jobs that involve full removal of old insulation add another 2 to 4 hours, which occasionally pushes into a second day.

Attic size, access, and whether removal is involved all change the timeline. If you’ve scheduled the job and you’re wondering how the day actually goes, here’s what to expect: our uniformed technician arrives inside the scheduled window, not a vague half-day range, walks the attic with you or your spouse if you want, lays down protection in the hallway, and gets to work. The person who shows up at your door has been background-checked and is wearing a uniform. You know exactly who is in your home.

How to Save on Blown-In Insulation

Blown-in insulation is one of the few home upgrades where the savings show up on both ends: you pay less upfront than you would for full spray foam replacement, and the monthly utility bill drops starting the first full billing cycle.

  • Top off instead of replace. If your existing insulation is clean and dry, you may only need to add 4 to 6 inches to reach the target R-value. That’s often $1,200 – $2,000 instead of $3,000+. We’ll tell you honestly whether a top-off gets you there or whether the old material has to come out.
  • Bundle air sealing into the same visit. Adding air sealing during the insulation install costs a fraction of what it would as a standalone visit. And without it, you’re essentially paying to insulate around leaks.
  • Skip radiant barrier if you’re on the coast. Radiant barriers pay back fastest in inland valleys. In Santa Monica or El Segundo, the heat load is lower and the payback is slower. Ask us and we’ll tell you whether it’s actually worth it in your zip code, even though it’s a line item we could sell you.
  • Do it in the shoulder season, not peak summer. Scheduling in March through May or October avoids the weeks when every attic in LA is 130°F inside and crews are booked out. Prices don’t change, but scheduling is easier and the work is safer.
  • Ask for the free estimate in writing. The Garrison Standard means a written price is in your hand before a single tool comes off the truck. No surprises at invoice. If a contractor won’t put a number in writing before the work starts, that’s your answer.

Everything here starts with a free, no-obligation estimate. Call (254) 272-5876 and you’ll talk to a live person, not a voicemail, at any hour.

FAQs – Blown-In Insulation Cost

How much does blown-in insulation cost in Los Angeles?

Most Los Angeles blown-in insulation projects run $1,200 to $4,800, with the typical single-family home landing around $2,600. Pricing is roughly $1.75 to $3.50 per square foot installed, depending on material type, current R-value, and whether old insulation needs removal. Call (254) 272-5876 for an exact quote, free and in writing.

Is blown-in insulation cheaper than spray foam?

Yes, and it’s usually substantially cheaper. Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose at $1.75 to $2.90 per square foot is roughly one-third to one-half the cost of closed-cell spray foam in the LA market, which often runs $5 to $8 per square foot. Spray foam wins on air sealing and R-value per inch; blown-in wins on cost and is the right call for most open attics.

Can I just add insulation on top of what’s already there?

Usually yes, if what’s there is dry, clean, and not compacted. Topping off from R-19 to R-49 typically costs $1,100 to $2,200 for a standard LA attic. If the existing material is wet, contaminated, or has been crushed by rodents, it has to come out first, which adds $1.00 to $2.25 per square foot to the job. We’ll tell you honestly which you’re looking at after we walk the attic. Estimates are free, so call (254) 272-5876.

How much does it cost to remove old insulation in Los Angeles?

Removal runs $1.00 to $2.25 per square foot, or roughly $1,400 to $3,500 for a typical LA attic. It’s higher than a normal install because it’s slower work, requires containment and disposal, and often means there’s an underlying moisture or rodent issue to document. If removal is needed, we photograph what we find and include the photos in your written estimate so you can see exactly what’s being addressed.

Will blown-in insulation actually lower my LA utility bill?

It often drops the cooling portion of an LA summer bill by 15% to 30%. Homes starting at R-11 or lower and topping off to R-38+ see the biggest gains, and the payback period in the San Fernando Valley and other inland areas is often 3 to 6 years. Coastal neighborhoods see a smaller gain because the temperature swings are milder. Call (254) 272-5876 and we’ll give you a realistic estimate for your specific zip code, not a generic pitch.

Get a Written Price Before You Decide

Blown-in insulation in Los Angeles isn’t a complicated purchase, but it is one where the number on the invoice can drift if you don’t have it in writing before work starts. Ours doesn’t.
