Blown-In Insulation Stopped Working

What’s Happening

When blown-in insulation stops working, it almost always means the material has settled, shifted, or been disturbed enough that it no longer covers your attic floor at the depth it needs to. The insulation is still there – it just isn’t thick enough or evenly distributed enough to do its job.

Blown-in insulation – whether it’s loose-fill fiberglass or cellulose – works by trapping air inside millions of tiny pockets. That trapped air is the real insulator. When the material compresses over time, or when something pushes it aside (a contractor rummaging through the attic, a rodent, ductwork that vibrated loose), those air pockets collapse and the thermal barrier gets thin. Your HVAC system runs longer to hit the same temperature. Rooms feel drafty or uneven. Energy bills climb for no obvious reason. That pattern almost always points back to the attic.

Why It Happens

Settlement and Compression Over Time

Blown-in insulation is designed to settle some during the first few weeks after installation – installers account for that. But over years, gravity and temperature cycling keep compressing the material. Fiberglass and cellulose both lose effective depth gradually. If your blown-in insulation is more than ten or fifteen years old and you’ve never had the depth checked, there’s a good chance it’s running thin. A homeowner can often spot this from an attic access hatch: if you can clearly see the tops of the floor joists poking through, the insulation has settled below the minimum depth it needs.

Air Infiltration Pushing the Material Around

Gaps in the attic floor – around recessed light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, or old bypass channels in interior walls – let conditioned air rush up into the attic. That moving air physically displaces loose-fill material, piling it against one wall and leaving thin spots everywhere else. You’ll notice this pattern as rooms on certain sides of the house feeling colder or hotter than others, even though the thermostat is set the same. Uneven room temperatures are a reliable tell for air-channeling problems underneath the insulation.

Moisture Damage

A slow roof leak or condensation problem can mat blown-in insulation into dense, useless clumps. Wet cellulose in particular loses almost all of its insulating value when it’s soaked. If you smell something musty near ceiling fixtures, or if you see water staining on attic sheathing, moisture has likely gotten into the insulation. Matted, dark-stained insulation that looks compressed in irregular patches is a clear sign the material needs to come out before anything new goes in.

Physical Disturbance from Attic Activity

HVAC technicians, cable installers, pest control crews – anyone who’s been up in the attic can accidentally kick loose-fill aside without realizing it. There’s no malice in it; it’s just hard to walk through an attic without disturbing the material. If your energy bills spiked noticeably after a contractor did attic work, that’s a reasonable connection to investigate. Pull back the access hatch and look with a flashlight: bare patches or piled-up ridges of insulation are exactly what displaced material looks like.

What to Do Right Now

  • Open the attic access hatch and look – safely. You don’t need to climb in. Shine a flashlight across the attic floor and look for bare joists, uneven coverage, or dark matted patches. Take a few photos on your phone. These are useful when you talk to a technician.
  • Check your recent energy bills. Pull the last three to six months and note whether costs have risen without a clear explanation like rate increases. A steady climb in usage is useful diagnostic information.
  • Note which rooms feel off. Walk the house and pay attention to which rooms feel drafty, hot, or hard to keep comfortable. Write it down. Patterns like “always the northeast corner bedroom” help a technician trace the problem faster.
  • Don’t go into the attic yourself to fix it. Attic floors aren’t built to be walked on by people who don’t know where the joists are. A missed step means a foot through the ceiling. Leave the physical inspection to a technician with the right equipment and footing.
  • Stop using the attic for storage access until someone has assessed it. If the insulation is already disturbed, more foot traffic makes the problem worse and can mask what the technician needs to see.

How We Fix It

When your local Alden Attic Insulation team arrives, the first thing a technician does is a proper attic assessment – measuring actual insulation depth at multiple points across the floor, checking for air bypasses, looking for moisture damage, and documenting what’s there. That assessment drives the written estimate. The price for your specific job goes in writing before any tool comes off the truck. That’s not a policy we bend.

If the existing blown-in material is in acceptable condition but simply too thin, the fix is typically a blown-in insulation top-up: adding material from our product lineup – Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, or GreenFiber, depending on what fits your attic and what’s already in place – to bring depth back to the right level.

If the material is moisture-damaged, contaminated, or badly displaced, the job starts with insulation removal first, then a clean reinstall. Most jobs are completed in a single visit. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
